Seeing him come on, the Goddess blew her conch. She made the twang of her bowstring too harsh to bear. She filled every quarter of space with the sound of her own bell, a sound that drains the strength of all the demon armies. Then the lion, with great roars that shook off the proud rut of the enemy's elephants, filled the sky, the earth, and the ten directions in just the same way.
Three sounds come first, and then a fourth: conch, bowstring, bell, and the lion's roar. Medhas tells the king that the Goddess does not strike yet. She fills the space around her enemy. A few words carry the verse. Shabda is sound, and here it is the weapon. Kakubh is a quarter of the sky, a direction. Tejas is fire, vigour, the heat of a person's strength. Mada is the rut of a bull elephant, its swollen pride, and the roar shakes it off. Clause by clause: she sees the enemy approaching, and she answers with the conch. The bowstring's twang becomes unbearable. Her bell fills the directions, and Medhas says it works on the tejas of the demon armies, taking the force out of them before any blow lands. Then the lion roars until the elephants lose their rut. Sky, earth and all ten directions are full, so there is no corner left that is not hers. Why tell this to Suratha and Samadhi? Both are men who lost their footing, one his kingdom, the other his family. Medhas has been showing them the Goddess as the great power that binds and also frees. Here the text shows that power as complete. The demons rely on size and armour and pride, and she begins by taking away the ground those stand on. The verse offers the two men a picture of a Mother whose presence leaves no empty place for fear or arrogance to stand in.
Picture a valley in a thunderstorm. One crack of thunder rolls off every wall of rock until nothing is left outside it. A shout from the far ridge is lost in it. The Goddess's sounds do this to the armies: they leave no quiet corner to stand in.
