Then Kali sprang up and struck the sky and the earth with her hands, and under that clamour the earlier sounds were lost. Shivaduti let out a harsh, ill-omened laugh. At those sounds the asuras trembled, and Shumbha went into a very great rage. When Ambika called out, 'Wicked one, stand, stand,' the gods who stood in the sky answered with the cry, 'Victory.'

Three words carry the passage. Kali is the dark one, the form of the Goddess who has come out of Ambika's fury to fight beside her. Shivaduti means the one who made Shiva her messenger, another power of the Goddess, here shown only by her laugh. Ashiva means not-auspicious, and the text uses it for that laugh: it is meant to frighten, not to comfort. The clauses go in order. Kali leaps and beats the sky and the ground with her hands. The din is so great that the sounds made earlier on the field, the conch, the bowstring and the bell, are covered over. Shivaduti then adds her laughter. Hearing it, the asuras shake with fear, and Shumbha, their king, burns with anger beyond his earlier anger. Ambika calls to him by name of his fault: wicked one, stand and face me. She does not strike him from behind or in silence. At that call the gods, watching from the sky, cry victory. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom to stronger hands. The question under the story is who really holds power. In this telling it is the Goddess, whose many forms fill the field with sound before a blow lands. Shumbha answers fear with rage, not with sense. The gods cry victory while the fight is still going on, since the text treats the outcome as already settled by who is standing there. The passage asks nothing of Suratha but to listen and see where the strength lies.

Picture a monsoon storm over a village: thunder rolling from end to end of the sky, drowning every other sound, and the dogs and children running for cover. The din arrives before any rain. Kali's blows on the sky and Shivaduti's laugh work the same way, as a sound that tells everyone the matter is already decided.
