Meaning · English
The spear of power that Shumbha came and hurled, terrible with flame, rushing like a blazing heap of fire, was struck down by the Goddess with a great firebrand. Shumbha's lion-roar filled the space between the three worlds, but a dreadful thunderclap-sound overcame it, O lord of the earth. The arrows Shumbha loosed at her, the Goddess cut down, and Shumbha cut down the arrows she sent, each with fierce arrows of their own, by hundreds and by thousands. Then Chandika, angered, struck him with her trident. Struck, he fell senseless to the ground.
Medhas tells the battle in four short moves. First, Shumbha throws a shakti, a spear of power, burning and fearsome. The Goddess knocks it away with a great ulka, a meteor or firebrand. Second, Shumbha roars and the sound fills the space between the three worlds. Then a dreadful nirghata, a thunderclap-sound, overcomes it. Third, arrows fly both ways. His come at her and hers at him, and each cuts down the other's, hundreds and thousands of times. Fourth, Chandika, whose name means the fierce one, grows angry and strikes him with her trident. He falls murchchhita, which comes from a root meaning to thicken or swoon. He is senseless, not yet said to be dead. Medhas tells this to King Suratha, who lost his kingdom to stronger hands. The story answers the fear behind that loss: what becomes of one who seizes much and trusts his own force? In Medhas's telling, Shumbha's fire, noise and arrows each meet a plain answer from the Goddess, and the last blow lands only when she is angered. The telling asks the king to hear that her strength is not matched by the strength of those who took from him.
A man hurls handful after handful of gravel at a stone wall. Each lot rattles off and drops in a heap at his feet, and the wall stands. In the verse, Shumbha's spear, roar and arrows are the gravel, and the Goddess is the wall that turns them all aside.
