Meaning · English
Then Nishumbha, having come back to his senses and taken up his bow, struck the Goddess with arrows, and Kali, and the lion too. Again the lord of the danavas, the son of Diti, made ten thousand arms, and with discs in every hand he covered Chandika. Then the blessed Durga, angry, she who ends the suffering of those in hard straits, cut those discs and those arrows with her own arrows.
Three words carry the passage. Ayuta means ten thousand, a number for more than anyone can count. Cakra is a disc, a spinning blade thrown from the hand. Durgartinashini is the name given to the Goddess at the end, and it splits in two. Durga means hard to get through, a place where the way is blocked. Arti is distress, and nashini is she who destroys it. So she is named as the one who ends the suffering of people stuck in hard places. The plain sense, clause by clause. Nishumbha wakes from his faint and picks up his bow. He shoots at the Goddess, at Kali beside her, and at the lion she rides. When that fails he grows ten thousand arms, each holding a disc, and buries Chandika under them. Chandika and Durga are the same Goddess under two names. She grows angry, and with her own arrows she cuts down the discs and the arrows together. Medhas tells this to Suratha, a king who lost his kingdom, and to Samadhi, a merchant thrown out by his family. Both are stuck, and both keep clinging to what has been taken from them. The text answers their trouble through this name. The blockage that looks like ten thousand arms is met by the one called the remover of such blockages. What it asks of the listener is only to hold that name beside the numbers, and to see that the sheer size of the attack does not decide how it ends.
Picture a doorway hung thick with strings of beads, so dense you cannot see through. One hand sweeps across and the whole curtain swings aside. The crowd of arms is the curtain, and the Goddess's single answer is the sweep of the hand.
