Nature Moves Under Krishna
Bhagavad Gita 9.10
Meaning · English
Under my direction, material nature brings forth all things, the moving and the unmoving. For this reason, son of Kunti, the world turns through its changes.
Krishna gives Arjuna a reason for the world's constant change. Three words carry it. Adhyaksha is the one who looks over something, a supervisor, from adhi, over, and aksha, the eye or the field of sight. Prakriti is nature, the material energy, from pra, forth, and kri, to make: the thing that produces. Viparivartate means to turn around and around, to go through changes. The plain sense: nature does the bringing forth, of everything that moves and everything that stays still, and she does it under Krishna's oversight. That is why the world keeps turning through its changes. The reason sits just before this, where Krishna says he is not bound by his actions, because he stands among them like one uninvolved. This answers a puzzle Arjuna might raise: if Krishna is not entangled, how is the world made at all? Nature works, and his presence is the oversight she works under. The verse asks Arjuna to see change as ordered, not random. Shankara reads the oversight as presence alone, a witness for whom nature acts. Ramanuja reads nature as the Lord's own body and power, directed by his will. Madhva stresses that Krishna is wholly distinct from nature and in full control of her.
A conductor stands before an orchestra and plays no instrument. Violins rise, drums fall away, the music shifts from bar to bar, and every player follows the one watching over them. The orchestra is nature, producing sound that moves and changes. The conductor is Krishna, whose oversight is why the playing holds together.
1. Pick one ordinary change today: the light moving across a wall, a kettle coming to the boil, a plant leaning toward a window. 2. Watch it for two minutes without doing anything else. 3. Say quietly to yourself, this is nature at work, and the change has a source behind it. 4. Before sleep, recall one thing that changed against your wishes today, and sit with it for a minute without arguing.
A man stands in a hospital corridor at night while his father sleeps after surgery. Monitors beep, the drip falls, the numbers on the screen shift. He feels every change as a threat, and he keeps checking, as though watching hard might hold things still. The verse would change the moment in steps. First, it names what he sees: nature, left to herself, always moves, and movement is her ordinary work. Second, Krishna teaches that this movement is not blind, because it runs under his oversight. Third, the man can stop treating each shift as his own failure to prevent it. He can still ask the nurse questions, still sit close, still do what is his to do. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind braced against every change tires quickly, and a tired mind decides worse. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that his father recovers, does not lessen the fear, and does not replace the doctors whose care he needs.
