Mistaken for a Mere Man

Bhagavad Gita 9.11

Meaning · English

Fools disregard me when I take on a human form. They do not know my higher nature, that I am the Supreme Lord of all beings.

Krishna uses three words that carry the weight. Mudha means dim-witted, someone whose sight stops at the surface. Tanu is a body or form, and manushi tells us it is a human one. Bhava is a being's inner nature, and param bhava is the higher nature behind the visible form. Krishna tells Arjuna that those who see only a man in a body overlook who stands in it. He is maheshvara, the Supreme Lord of all beings, and he has taken on a human form. Disregard is the result of that blindness. They do not hate him so much as pass him by, because the form looks ordinary. The reason sits in the verses around it: he has just said he directs all of nature and stays unbound by it. A person who judges by the outer form will miss that completely. The verse asks the listener to see the one standing in the form and not only the form. The commentators differ on the body. Shankara reads the fools as taking the Lord for an ordinary person, ignorant of his nature as the Self of all. Ramanuja holds that Krishna's form is not made of matter like ours but is his own, and the fools wrongly compare it with a common body. Madhva also reads the body as wholly divine and the mistake as a failure to know that.

A traveler stops at a roadside tea stall and treats the old man pouring the tea as hired help. He never learns the man owns the whole orchard behind it. He judged by the apron and the kettle. The verse works the same way: the human form is the apron, and Krishna is the owner nobody asked about.

1. Today, pick one person you usually look past, such as a guard, a cleaner or a delivery driver. Greet them by name or with a real question. 2. Before you decide anything about someone new, pause for the length of one breath. Ask yourself what you do not yet know about them. 3. At night, take two minutes to recall one moment when you judged someone by how they looked or spoke. Note what you missed.

A woman waits at a clinic counter, tired and short of patience, and snaps at the quiet man in a faded shirt who is slow to find his papers. Minutes later she learns he is the visiting surgeon who will operate on her mother. In that moment the verse would work in steps. First she would notice that her judgment came from his clothes and his pace, not from anything she knew. Second, she would hold back one beat before deciding what he is worth. Third, she would speak to him as someone whose full nature she has not seen. Ordinary experience confirms that quick judgments from appearance are often wrong. The verse is also narrower than this scene. Krishna speaks of himself as the Supreme Lord in a human form, a claim the text makes about him alone. It does not tell her that every stranger is secretly great, and it does not remove her worry for her mother. It does not replace the surgeon's skill or her own checking of his credentials where that is needed.
