Bhagavad Gita 9.13

Meaning · English

The great souls, Arjun, take shelter of my divine energy. Knowing me as the origin of all creation, and as imperishable, they engage in devotion with minds fixed on me alone.

Three words carry the verse. Mahatma is maha, great, plus atma, soul. Here greatness is not rank or fame. Krishna describes it by where a person takes shelter. Ananya-manas is ananya, not-other, plus manas, mind: a mind with no second address. Bhajana comes from a root meaning to share in or to serve, so devotion is a steady taking part, not an occasional feeling. Krishna tells Arjuna that such souls shelter in his divine energy, and that they do this because they know two things: he is the origin of everything that exists, and he does not perish. Knowing comes first, and devotion follows from it. The reason is the problem of the verses just before, where people shelter in what bewilders them and their efforts come to nothing. Someone who sees the source and the imperishable has no reason to scatter the mind. What it asks of the listener is to ask where the mind actually goes for shelter when things get hard. Shankara reads the divine energy as a godly disposition, made of qualities like self-control and faith. Ramanuja reads the great souls as people who know the Lord as source and cannot bear to be apart from him. Madhva stresses that the knowing is of the Lord's supremacy, and that devotion rests on it.

Caught in a monsoon downpour, one traveller runs from tree to shop awning to bus stop, soaked at every stop. Another walks to the one roof she trusts and stays. The scattered mind is the first traveller. The mind fixed on a single refuge, because it knows what that refuge rests on, is the second.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and notice where your mind runs when worry comes: money, a person, a screen. 2. Name the one thing you would trust to rest on if the others failed, whether a prayer, a name of God, or a line of the Gita. 3. Tomorrow, the next time you feel pulled in three directions, say that one thing slowly once, then go back to the task. 4. Repeat for a week and notice whether the pull weakens.

A father lies awake at two in the morning before his daughter's wedding. The caterer's balance is unpaid, a relative is sulking, and the weather forecast is bad. His mind jumps from one worry to the next and settles on none. The verse speaks to that jumping. Krishna describes great souls as minds with one address, resting on what they know to be the source and what does not perish. For the father, the first step is to stop feeding each worry in turn. He picks the one thing he trusts, a prayer or a name, and returns to it each time the list starts again. In the morning he still has the same tasks, but he meets them from a steadier place. Ordinary experience confirms that a scattered mind sleeps badly and decides badly. The verse does not promise that the money will arrive, that the rain will hold off, or that grief and illness will pass. It is also no substitute for a doctor when sleeplessness or anxiety becomes a daily weight.
