Worship That Never Pauses
Bhagavad Gita 9.14
Meaning · English
Always singing my glories, striving with great determination, humbly bowing down to me in loving devotion, constantly united with me, they worship.
Krishna is describing how the great souls live, and the verse has four strands. The first is kirtana, from a root meaning to tell or proclaim. It is singing or speaking of God's glories, and the verse says it goes on satatam, always, not only at set hours. The second is yatanta, striving, joined to dridha-vrata. A vrata is a vow, and dridha means firm. So the effort is steady, held by a promise to oneself, and not a burst of enthusiasm. The third is namas, bowing, done with bhakti, loving devotion. The bow is humble, and the love is what keeps it from being empty form. The fourth is nitya-yukta. Nitya means constant, and yukta means yoked or joined, the same root as yoga. These people stay joined to Krishna, and upasate, worship, literally means sitting near. The reason comes from the verses before. Some people take shelter in a bewildering nature and end up with vain hopes and vain actions. The great souls take shelter in the divine and stay close to it, so their days hold together. Shankara reads the striving as self-control, calm and austerity practised alongside devotion. Ramanuja reads it as love so complete that these devotees cannot bear a moment away from Krishna. Madhva stresses that this devotion rests on knowing Krishna as supreme.
A houseplant on a windowsill leans toward the glass. Turn the pot around and, within days, the stems bend back toward the light, without any fuss. The verse describes a mind that does this with Krishna: singing, striving, bowing and loving are all one steady leaning toward the same source.
1. Choose one ordinary daily task, such as washing dishes, walking to the bus or making tea. Today, during it, quietly say or hum a name or line of praise you already know. 2. Keep it going for the whole task, about five to ten minutes. When your mind wanders, bring it back without scolding yourself. 3. Before you sleep, bow your head for a few seconds toward whatever you hold sacred. 4. Notice whether the task felt any different, and repeat it tomorrow at the same time.
A taxi driver sits in a jam on the way to the airport, a passenger checking his watch in the back. His jaw is tight and he is ready to snap at the next horn. Then he starts humming the song his mother sang while she cooked. In Krishna's picture of the great souls, praise does not wait for a quiet room. It goes along with the work. The humming gives his mind one thing to hold besides the traffic. His breath slows a little. He answers the passenger kindly instead of sharply. The jam is the same, and so is the clock, but he is the one steering through it, not the irritation. Ordinary experience bears this out: a repeated tune or phrase can steady a restless mind, and a habit practised daily comes more easily than one saved for special days. The verse does not promise that the road clears, that the flight is caught, or that worry never returns. It does not replace rest, medical care or practical help when they are needed. It describes a way of staying near God while the day goes on.
