Knowledge as Offering

Bhagavad Gita 9.15

Meaning · English

Others too worship me by offering knowledge, seeing me as one undivided, or as separate and distinct, or in many forms, as the cosmic form that faces every direction.

Krishna has just described devotees who sing and bow without pause. Now he names another kind of worshiper, those who offer knowledge. Jnana-yajna means a sacrifice made of study and understanding. The effort to know becomes the offering placed in the fire. Three ways of seeing him follow. Ekatva is oneness, with no gap between the worshiper and him. Prithaktva is separateness, with him as one and the worshiper as another. Bahudha is manyness, meeting him in countless forms. All three end in the viswato-mukha, the cosmic form with faces in every direction. Krishna says each of these seekers is worshiping him. The reason is that he is present everywhere, so a mind turned toward any part of the world, or toward its source, is facing him. Krishna asks nothing here except that the effort be sincere. Shankara reads the three views as stages in understanding, with oneness as the deepest. Ramanuja reads them as seeing the world and souls as belonging to the Lord, who dwells within them. Madhva stresses the separateness, with the Lord distinct from the worshiper.

A hill looks different from each village around it. From one it is a sharp peak, from another a long ridge, from a third a blue line at dusk. People argue over what it looks like, yet it is one hill. The seekers are the villagers, and Krishna is the hill.

1. Choose one thing you are learning today, such as a recipe, a page of a book, or how to fix a tap, and give it ten unhurried minutes. 2. Before you start, say quietly, "This effort is an offering." 3. While you work, notice one small thing about how the subject is built or how its parts fit. 4. When you stop, pause for a breath before moving on, and notice how the time felt.

A college student sits with a physics textbook at the kitchen table while his mother sings her morning hymns in the next room. He feels he is the cold one in the family, with no devotion in him. The verse speaks to that guilt. Krishna says that offering knowledge is itself worship. So the student can open the book, fix his attention on how things hold together, and treat that effort as given to the one present in all of it. Nothing else has to be added to the hour or felt during it. Then, when the chapter feels dry, he can remember that his mother's way and his own are both named as ways to Krishna, and he need not rank them. Ordinary experience does confirm that work done for something larger than oneself tends to feel steadier than work done only to get through it. The verse does not promise that the exam will go well, that understanding will come easily, or that the guilt will vanish in a single sitting.
