Bhagavad Gita 9.17

Meaning · English

I am the Father of this universe, its Mother, its Sustainer, and its Grandsire. I am the goal of knowledge and the purifier, the sacred syllable Om, and the Rig, the Sama and the Yajur Vedas as well.

Three words carry the verse. Pita is father, the one who gives a start. Mata is mother, the one who bears and feeds. Dhata is the sustainer, the one who holds things in place and keeps them going. Krishna adds pitamaha, the grandsire, the parent behind the parents. Then he turns from family to learning. Vedya is what is to be known, the goal that all study aims at. Pavitra is what purifies. He names Om, the sacred sound, and the three Vedas, Rig, Sama and Yajur, as himself too. The plain sense: whatever a person leans on, as source, as support, or as the aim of study, Krishna says it is him. The reason sits in the verses before it. He has just called himself the ritual, the fire and the offering, and now the same claim reaches the whole world and the sacred texts. Arjuna is about to act in fear and confusion, and Krishna wants him to know what stands behind all things. The listener is asked to see one source where many seem to be. Shankara reads these names as pointing to the one Brahman behind the world. Ramanuja reads them as showing the Lord as the inner self of all that exists. Madhva stresses the Lord as supreme and distinct from the world he sustains.

A child at a wedding feels lost in the crowd, then spots a grandmother's face across the hall and relaxes. The whole room is still strangers, yet one face gives it a root. Krishna names himself the root behind every parent, teacher and sacred sound a person meets.

1. Tonight, pick one meal and, before eating, name three people or things that brought it to you: the cook, the farmer, the rain. 2. Sit quietly for two minutes and think of someone who raised or taught you. Say their name inwardly, with thanks. 3. Tomorrow morning, when you open a book or a message you value, pause for one breath and notice where its knowledge came from.

A man stands in his late mother's kitchen the week after the funeral, holding a jar of pickle she made. He cannot decide whether to open it or keep it sealed. Her hands made it, her mother taught her, and a farmer grew what is in it. The verse speaks to this moment by widening the question. First he sees the jar as a line of givers: mother, grandmother, the field. Then he can see that the care he received was not only hers, because Krishna tells Arjuna that the mother, the father and the grandsire of this world are one source. Then the sorrow has somewhere to rest besides the empty chair. He can open the jar, eat, and feel thanks alongside the loss. Ordinary experience agrees that remembering who fed us steadies the heart. The verse does not promise that grief will lift, that the kitchen will feel less empty, or that any teaching replaces the people who have died. It offers a way of holding their love as part of something that continues.
