Everything You Rely On

Bhagavad Gita 9.18

Meaning · English

I am the goal, the sustainer, the master and the witness. I am the abode, the shelter and the friend. I am the origin and the dissolution, the storehouse, the resting place, and the seed that does not perish.

Krishna lists thirteen roles in one breath. Three words carry the weight. Gati is a going, the place a road ends. Sharanam comes from going to someone for protection, so it means a refuge you run toward. Bija is a seed, and avyaya means not spent, so the seed never runs out. Read in order, the list moves through the whole of a life. He is the goal people walk toward, the one who holds them up while they walk, the master who rules and the witness who sees every act. He is the home and the shelter, and then the friend, the nearest word on the list. Next come beginning, ending, storehouse and resting place, then the seed from which things grow again. Krishna says this because Arjuna, like most people, looks for support in many separate places. The list says that the support, the destination and the origin are one. Shankara reads the list as the one Self standing behind all that appears. Ramanuja reads it as the personal Lord on whom every being depends and who is near to those who turn to him. Madhva reads it as God who rules the world and is distinct from it. All three take the friend and the shelter as real offers, not decoration.

A family home with a light left on. People leave from it in the morning, come back to it when they are tired, and are known by it wherever they go. Its roof shelters them, and its kitchen was where they first learned to eat. The verse names a refuge like that, which is also where the road starts and where it ends.

1. Tonight, before sleep, sit for two minutes and name three things you lean on that you rarely notice: a person, a place, a habit. 2. Choose one of the thirteen roles, say shelter or friend, and notice when today you reach for it, in worry, in tiredness, in a quiet gap. 3. At the day's end, say aloud one thing you were glad was seen, even if no one saw it. Keep it to one sentence.

A woman has just moved to a new city for work. It is her first night in the flat, the boxes are unopened, and the street outside is unfamiliar. She feels the lack of everything she used to lean on. Krishna's list names what she is missing: a shelter, a friend, a place to rest, a witness to her day. The verse offers a single support behind all of those, so that a bare room need not mean no support. She could sit on the floor among the boxes, name the shelter she has tonight, and say one sentence about the day as if to a friend who was listening. Ordinary experience agrees that being heard, even silently, steadies a restless mind. The verse does not promise that loneliness will leave, that the move will go well, or that the missing people are replaced. It also does not replace a call to family, or a doctor's help if the heaviness stays for weeks.
