Meaning · English
While longing lives, the shoot of the tree of worldly wandering keeps its place, and the mind stays in confusion, taking up this and putting down that. In action, attraction is born. In stopping, only aversion. The wise one, free of the pairs, stays like a child, settled just so.
Three words carry the teaching. Spriha is longing, a thirst that wants something other than what is here. Samsara is the worldly round, the wandering from one gain or loss to the next. Raga is attraction, from a root meaning to be coloured, as cloth takes dye. Dvesha is its mirror, aversion. Nirdvandva means free of the pairs, such as liking and disliking, taking up and putting down. Ashtavakra tells Janaka that the round of worldly life is a tree, and longing is what keeps its young shoot alive. As long as that thirst lives, the mind stays in confusion. It is always busy choosing what to grab and what to push away. Then he names the two ways the thirst shows itself. When a person acts, attraction rises, because acting is reaching for something. When the person stops, aversion rises, because stopping feels like loss or boredom. So quitting the busy life does not end the trouble. The same longing only changes its face. The wise one, he says, is free of both and stays like a child. A child is not cold. It simply does not carry yesterday's wants into the next moment. Ashtavakra is answering Janaka's question about what dispassion really is. It is not effort at renouncing. It is the shoot of longing no longer being fed.
A clock pendulum swings left, then right, and never rests. One wound spring drives both swings. Attraction and aversion are the two swings, and longing is the spring behind them. The child is the pendulum hanging still because no spring is wound.
1. Pick one task you do today, such as washing dishes or answering messages, and notice the moment just before you start. See whether you are reaching for something. 2. When you finish and sit idle for two minutes, notice whether dislike of the empty time rises. 3. Simply name each one quietly, "pulling" or "pushing away", and change nothing. 4. Once today, watch a small child at play and see how it moves from one thing to the next.
A man wakes on his first morning of retirement. For thirty years he was pulled toward the workshop, the orders and the phone. Now the house is quiet, and he feels a dislike of the stillness that surprises him. He picks up a tool he does not need, only to be busy. The teaching would change this moment in steps. First, he sees that the restlessness is the same longing that once drove him to work, now wearing the face of aversion to idleness. Second, he sees that grabbing a new project would only start the swing again. Third, he lets the quiet stand for a few minutes without choosing, as a child sits on a step without needing a reason. Ordinary experience confirms that boredom pushes people into action they do not really want. The limit: this does not promise that the restlessness will vanish, and it does not ease the sadness of a finished working life. If low mood or sleeplessness lasts for weeks, a doctor should be asked.
