Meaning · English
The one still coloured by craving wants to leave the world, because he wants to be rid of pain. The one whose craving is gone has no pain, and even in that state he is not troubled. But the man who is proud even of liberation, and who still says "mine" of his own body, is neither a knower nor a yogi. He is only a sharer in suffering.
Three words carry it. Raagi, the craving one, comes from raj, to be dyed: his mind is stained with wanting. Vitaraga, the one beyond craving, is the colour gone out. Abhimana is pride, the thought "I am this one, I have got this", from man, to think. Mamata is mine-ness, from mama, mine. Ashtavakra first describes the craving person. He wants out of the world, but what drives him is only the wish to be rid of pain. That is still craving, now aimed at escape. The person free of craving has no pain to flee, and even the thought of freedom does not trouble him. Then he names the one who fails. This person is proud of being liberated, or still holds his body as "mine". Ashtavakra says he is neither a knower nor a yogi, only a partaker of suffering. Pride and mine-ness are the very things that cause the pain. Why teach this to Janaka? The chapter keeps asking what real dispassion is. Ashtavakra's answer is that wanting freedom as a prize, and holding it as a possession, is bondage in a finer form. The text asks the listener to notice the ownership: "my" calm, "my" progress, "my" body.
A man tired of a noisy house shuts himself in a back room and is proud of the quiet he has won. But he is still guarding the door against every sound. The quiet is something he holds, so he is not at rest. Pride in freedom is the same: the grip stays, only the thing gripped has changed.
1. Pick one ordinary hour today, such as the walk home or washing dishes, and notice each time the thought "my" arises: my time, my peace, my body, my progress. 2. When a pleasant thought of "I am doing well at this" appears, name it quietly: pride. Do not argue with it. 3. Once this week, when you are tired or aching, say to yourself "the body hurts" instead of "my body hurts", and watch for any change in the grip.
A woman is three weeks into a quiet morning routine. She is calm, and rather pleased about it. Then her brother chews loudly at breakfast, and she snaps, and then feels she has lost something she owned. The verse would change that moment in steps. First she sees that the snap came from guarding a possession, "my calm", and not from the noise. Then she sees the pleasure at being calmer than others, which is the pride the text names. Then she lets the calm be something that comes and goes, not a trophy, and the brother is only a man eating. Ordinary experience agrees that a calm we are proud of tends to be fragile, because there is something to lose. The verse does not promise she will stop being irritated, and it does not remove real pain, illness or grief. Where the body needs a doctor, it needs a doctor. The verse speaks only to the grip around even good things.
