Peace Through Forgetting
Ashtavakra Gita 16.11
Meaning · English
Even if Shiva, Vishnu, or the lotus-born Brahma were your teacher, you would still have no peace in yourself, except through forgetting everything.
Ashtavakra tells Janaka that even the three greatest names, Hara (Shiva), Hari (Vishnu) and the lotus-born Brahma, could instruct him and still not give him peace. Only forgetting all can. Three words carry it. Upadeshta is the teacher, one who points the way, from upa-dish, to point toward. Svasthya is peace, but the root is sva, one's own, and stha, to stand: standing in oneself, health in the oldest sense. Vismarana is forgetting, from smri, to remember, with vi, apart: remembering undone. Sarva is all. Clause by clause: suppose the highest teachers instruct you. Still there is no standing in yourself, unless everything held in the mind is let go. The text names the greatest teachers on purpose. Their teaching is not lacking. Peace is not an object that can be passed from one hand to another, so no giver, however great, can place it in a hand that is still grasping. It comes up here because the verses before it describe craving and aversion, accepting and rejecting, which keep the world growing in the mind. Peace is where that stops. Forgetting all means every held thing put down: goals, grievances, even the wish to be free. The listener is asked to see that what the mind chases by gaining is found by releasing.
A snow globe has been shaken, and the flakes swirl so thickly that nothing inside can be seen. No one can pour clearness into it. It comes only when the hand stops and the flakes settle on their own. The shaking is the grasping mind. The clear glass is the peace that was there all along.
1. Tonight, sit for five minutes with no book, phone or plan, in a chair or on the edge of the bed. 2. When a task, worry or old quarrel comes up, do not argue with it. Notice it and let it go unfinished. 3. Notice how the body feels when nothing is being held, even for a few breaths. 4. Repeat this each evening for a week, and notice whether the mind stays quiet a little longer.
A woman lies awake at two in the morning after a hard day. Her phone is full of advice, and she has watched three videos on how to sleep, and she is more awake than before. Each tip became one more thing to hold, one more task to get right. The verse would change the moment in steps. First she sees that no further instruction, however wise, will do it. Then she puts the phone face down, and the list of things to fix is left unfinished until morning. Then she stops chasing sleep and lets the mind stop gripping the day. Ordinary experience confirms that a tired mind that keeps working at its worries stays alert, and one that is allowed to drop them grows quiet. The text teaches that peace is the self standing in itself once everything held is forgotten. The limit is plain: the verse does not promise sleep tonight. It does not remove grief or pain, and it is no substitute for a doctor when sleeplessness persists or has a physical cause.
