Meaning · English

He who is content, whose senses are clear, who always delights in being alone, has gained the fruit of knowledge and the fruit of yoga practice as well. The knower of truth never grieves in this world. By that one Self, this whole sphere of the universe is filled.

Four words carry it. Tripta means content, from trip, to be satisfied, like a hunger that has actually been fed. Ekaki means alone, from eka, one. It does not mean lonely. It means resting in the one Self with no second thing needed. Tattvajna means knower of tattva, the 'thatness' of things, what is really so. Khidyati means to be worn down or distressed, and the text says this never happens to the knower. The first line says what marks the one who has arrived: content, senses clear, delighting in the Self. Such a person has already collected the reward of knowledge and of yoga. Nothing is left over to be earned. The second line draws the result. This person does not grieve, because grief needs something missing. The last line gives the reason Ashtavakra offers. Through this one Self the whole round of the universe is full. Nothing lies outside it that could be lost or lacking. It is taught here because Janaka has been speaking of his own freedom, and Ashtavakra now describes how such a person actually looks from outside. The test is contentment and the end of grief, not display.

A single lamp stands in the middle of a closed room, and light reaches every corner. No corner asks for its own lamp. In the same way, the one Self fills the whole world, so the knower finds nothing outside it to miss.

1. Tonight, sit alone for ten minutes with the phone in another room and nothing to read or watch. 2. Notice the first thing that pulls at you: a want, a worry, a missing person. Name it silently, without chasing it. 3. Ask once: is anything actually lacking at this moment, right here? 4. Tomorrow, repeat it for the same ten minutes and notice whether the pull is the same.

A retired teacher sits in her flat on Sunday evening. The light is fading, the phone has not rung, and her children have not called. The old ache of being forgotten rises, and with it a list of small grievances. The text would have her look at that moment step by step. First, the ache has a shape: it says something is missing. Next, ask whether what is missing is out there, in a call that did not come, or whether the sense of lack is itself what is hurting. Then notice what remains when the wanting is set down for a while: the room, the breath, a quiet that was there all along. The text teaches that the knower rests in that fullness and so does not grieve. Ordinary experience agrees with a small part of this: wanting something badly makes an empty hour feel emptier. The limit is plain. This does not make a missed call stop mattering, and it does not cure loneliness that comes from real isolation or low mood. If the heaviness lasts for weeks, a doctor or a trusted person should hear about it.
