The Elephant's Taste
Ashtavakra Gita 17.3
Meaning · English
Sense objects, whatever they are, never delight one who rejoices in the Self, just as bitter neem leaves do not please an elephant that loves the tender sallaki leaf.
Three words carry it. Vishaya, a sense object, is anything the senses reach for: a taste, a sound, a sight, a possession. Svarama is made of sva, the Self, and rama, one who plays or rests happily. It names a person whose pleasure is at home in the Self. Harshayanti means to thrill or gladden. The first line says no object at all can gladden such a person. The second line gives the comparison. An elephant raised on sweet sallaki leaves can be offered neem, and the neem will not tempt it. Ashtavakra tells King Janaka the reason is taste, not discipline. The elephant is not refusing neem by effort. Neem simply is not food to it. In the same way, the one who rests in the Self has a joy the objects cannot match, so they lose their pull without a fight. This answers a worry that dispassion means a hard life of denial. Ashtavakra describes it as a change in what the heart finds sweet. The listener is asked to look at where delight actually lives. If it lives in objects, they will keep pulling. If it lives in the Self, they cannot.
Think of someone who has just eaten a full, rich meal at a wedding feast, and a neighbour holds out a plate of dry crusts. The hand does not reach. No vow is needed. Fullness decides it. The feast is the Self's own joy, and the crusts are the world's objects.
1. Tonight, pick one pleasure you reach for out of habit, such as a snack, a scroll through your phone, or a sweet. 2. Before you reach, sit still for two minutes and notice whether you are hungry or only restless. 3. Then do something that fully absorbs you, such as listening to a song or watching the light change in a window. 4. Afterwards, notice whether the habit still calls as loudly. Note it without judging yourself either way.
A woman stands in her kitchen at ten at night. She has just spent a quiet half hour listening to rain on the roof, and now her thumb drifts toward a shopping app. She stops and notices something: while the rain held her, she wanted nothing. The pull started only when she emptied out. The verse speaks to that gap. It says the objects are not the problem. They call loudest when nothing else is satisfying. Ordinary experience agrees on a small scale, since a full stomach makes sweets less tempting. Step by step, she would first see the wanting arise, then see that it grows when she is bored or tired, then see that the thing that satisfied her was already present. The text goes further and says the Self is the lasting source of that satisfaction. The limit is plain. The verse does not promise that grief, illness or loss will stop hurting, and it does not replace a doctor when a craving has become a compulsion or an addiction.
