The Devoted Are Carried

Bhagavad Gita 9.22

Meaning · English

Those people who think of me alone, always, and worship me exclusively, who are ever absorbed in me: for them I carry what they lack, and I protect what they already hold.

Three terms hold the verse. Ananya means "no other": a mind with no second refuge to run to. Nitya-abhiyukta means always joined, steadily absorbed, not now and then. Yoga-kshema is a pair. Yoga is gaining what is missing, and kshema is guarding what is already held. The verb vahami means "I carry", the word for bearing a load. Krishna tells Arjuna that people who think of him with no other support, and stay absorbed in him, have their lacks supplied and their holdings kept safe by him. The reason sits in the verses just before. Those who worship for heaven enjoy it and then return when their merit runs out. These devotees ask for nothing but him, so he takes the burden of provision on himself. What it asks of the listener is undivided, constant remembrance rather than an occasional bargain. Shankara reads the pair as gaining and keeping, and says devotees who see only the Lord do not even strive for their own upkeep, so he provides it. Ramanuja says such devotees cannot live without him, so he himself bears the work of bringing them to him and holding them there. Madhva takes it as the Lord granting what is lacking and preserving it, as he leads the devotee toward liberation.

A small child sleeps on her father's shoulder on a crowded train. She holds no ticket and carries no bag, and she never watches the stations. He carries the luggage, the tickets and her. The devotee is the child, resting in one steady attention. Krishna is the father who bears the load.

1. Choose one short name or phrase you love and fix a daily time, such as when you wake, for saying it quietly for two minutes. 2. When a worry starts circling today, stop and say that phrase once before deciding anything. 3. At night, write one thing you were holding too tightly. Notice whether the day went on without your gripping it. 4. Do this for one week and see what changes in your mind, not in your circumstances.

A father lies awake at three in the morning. The list goes round: rent, his daughter's fees, a cough that will not clear. Each worry feeds the next, and the night gets longer. Krishna's promise, as the text gives it, is made to those whose attention has one resting place. So the father picks one steady thought, a name he loves, and says it slowly. Each time the list comes back, he returns to the name. He does not argue with the worries. He simply has somewhere else to stand. The text teaches that Krishna carries what such a person lacks and guards what he has, and the father can lay the load down a little for that reason. Ordinary experience agrees that a crowded mind sleeps badly and a settled one rests more easily. The verse does not promise that the fees will be paid, that grief or loss will be spared, or that the cough is nothing. A cough that persists still needs a doctor.
