Meaning · English
Even those devoted to other gods, who worship with faith and full heart, are in truth worshipping me alone, Arjun, son of Kunti, though not by the proper method.
Three words carry the verse. Shraddha, here rendered faith, is trust held with the whole heart. Yajana is worship, an offering made. Avidhi-purvaka means by the wrong method: avidhi is without the rule or proper way, purvaka is in the manner of. Krishna tells Arjuna that people who give their faithful worship to other gods are still, in fact, worshipping him alone. Their sincerity is not wasted and not ignored. What he marks is the method: it is not the right one, because it does not know where the offering finally goes. The reason follows in the next verses: he is the enjoyer and master of every offering, and those who miss this fall back into the round of birth. The verse asks the listener to see where worship ends up, and to let faith be aimed with understanding. Shankara reads the wrong method as worship that does not see the one Self behind all gods. Ramanujacharya holds that every god is a form of Vishnu, so the offering reaches him, yet the seeker clings to lesser fruits. Madhva stresses that the gods are lesser and dependent, and that worship is properly directed to Vishnu.
A man posts a letter with a careful address, a stamp and real love in every line, but he drops it in a box for another town. It still travels through the one postal system and reaches a sorting office. Faith is the letter, and the wrong method is the address that routes it the long way round.
1. Tonight, before any prayer or quiet moment you already keep, pause for ten seconds and ask: to whom am I really offering this, and what do I want back? 2. Name the wish plainly, in one sentence, without judging it. 3. Then say the offering once more, with the wish set beside it rather than driving it. 4. Tomorrow, notice whether the sincerity felt the same.
A grandmother sits at the temple of a small local deity, lips moving, asking for her grandson's exam result. A neighbour mutters that she is praying to the wrong power. What would the verse change here? First, her sincerity is counted as real worship, not mocked. Second, the verse points past the outcome she is bargaining for toward the one to whom every offering goes. Third, she can keep her devotion and let the asking become quieter, less a trade. Ordinary experience confirms that a mind fixed on one anxious result prays tightly, and a mind that offers without gripping prays more steadily. The verse also does not promise that the exam will go well, that sorrow will lift, or that sincere asking changes the marks. It makes no claim about illness or loss either, and where a child is struggling, a teacher or a doctor is still the right door.
