Who Truly Receives

Bhagavad Gita 9.24

Meaning · English

I alone am the enjoyer and the Lord of every sacrifice. But those who do not know me in my true nature slip, and fall back into wandering.

Krishna uses three words that carry the weight. Bhokta means the enjoyer, the one who partakes, from a root for eating and receiving. Prabhu means lord or master, the one who stands over a thing and governs it. Tattva means 'that-ness', a thing as it really is rather than as it appears. Krishna says he is both the one who receives every sacrifice and the one who rules over it. Whatever is offered, to whatever name, the offering ends with him. The people he speaks of do not recognise him in this true nature, and so they slip. The word for falling means slipping away from a footing, not being thrown down in punishment. They fall back into the cycle of rebirth and wandering. The reason he gives is simple. An offering that is aimed at a part, with the whole unseen, keeps returning its giver to the start. Knowing who receives is what lets the giving arrive. Shankara reads this as Ishvara, the Lord, being the true recipient of all rites, and ignorance of this as what keeps one wandering. Ramanuja says the other gods are his body, so he is the real recipient even of their rites. Madhva stresses that Krishna is the independent Lord, and knowing his supremacy is what frees a person.

At a wedding feast a guest thanks the waiters, praises the sweets, and never learns who the host is. Every plate was sent from one kitchen, by one person. Krishna says he is that host. Those who never ask whose table it is keep circling the same room.

1. At dinner tonight, before the first bite, pause ten seconds. Think of the people who grew, carried and cooked the food, and of Krishna as the one who receives all giving. 2. Pick one small chore today, such as washing cups or answering a message. As you start, say silently, 'This is for Krishna.' Notice if your hurry changes. 3. Before sleep, recall one act you did only for thanks or credit. Notice how it felt compared with the chore you offered.

A young cook is stirring a huge pot of rice in a wedding kitchen at five in the morning. His back aches, the guests are asleep, and no one will ask his name. Krishna tells Arjuna that he is the one who receives every sacrifice. For the cook, that means the work has a recipient even with no audience. Step by step: he stirs, and the stirring is the offering. He stops asking who will notice. The pot is still heavy, but the task has an address, and a task with an address is easier to finish steadily. Ordinary experience agrees that work done only for applause tires us faster when the applause does not come. The verse does not promise that the ache goes away, that wages arrive, or that the cook should skip rest or a doctor if his back needs one. It speaks of where the offering lands, and the cook's tiredness remains his own.
