Meaning · English
She gave me her crest-jewel, eyes full of tears: Clasp the Lord's feet, with his brother. In mind, deed and word I loved him; what fault made him leave me? Each moment is an age, ocean of mercy. Come quickly, beat the wicked host.
Hanuman is now repeating Sita's own words to Rama. Three words carry the verse. Cudamani is the crest-jewel, a jewel worn in the hair. She sends it as a token that only she and Rama would know, and Rama takes it to his heart. Biraha is the pain of separation. Sita describes it as a fire, her body as cotton and her breath as the wind that feeds it. Her eyes keep pouring water for the body's sake, and that water is why she has not burned away. Dinabandhu is Friend of the Lowly. She uses it, and karunanidhi, Ocean of Mercy, to call on Rama's nature rather than to complain. Her message runs in order. She asks Hanuman to touch the feet of Rama and Lakshman for her. She asks gently what fault of hers caused her to be left, since her love has been steady in mind, deed and word. Then she names the only fault she can find: her life did not leave when they parted. She says her eyes are guilty too, because they blocked the breath's way out. Her whole trouble is too large to tell. Tulsidas then gives the plea in the doha. Each moment drags like an age, so Rama should come quickly and win her back by the strength of his arm. The verse asks nothing of the listener except to hear a faithful love speak plainly.
Think of someone waiting on a station platform for a person who promised to come, watching the clock hand barely move. Five minutes feel like an afternoon. Sita's every moment in Lanka is that clock, stretched over days, and her plea is to be fetched soon.
