Meaning · English

Hearing Sita's sorrow, the Lord of joy filled with tears, lotus eyes brimming. Rama says: whoever holds me as refuge in word, deed and mind, can trouble touch him even in dream? Hanuman answers: trouble is when remembering and worship stop. Rama says: no god, man or sage is your equal in service; I cannot repay you. Hanuman falls at his feet, crying for protection.

Three words carry the passage. Bipati (trouble) is defined by Hanuman: it is not hunger or danger but the days when remembering Rama, sumirana, and worship, bhajana, do not happen. Gati means refuge or last resort; Rama says the one whose gati is me in bacana, kaya and mana, word, body and mind, never meets bipati, even in a dream. Upakari is one who does a good turn. Rama calls Hanuman the best of them. The story runs like this. Rama hears of Sita's grief and weeps, though Tulsidas calls him the source of joy. He then says that one who takes his shelter wholly should not meet misery, and wonders aloud how Sita suffers. Hanuman gently turns the question: real misery is forgetting Rama. Rama then says no god, man or sage has ever helped him as Hanuman has. He tells Hanuman, here called son, that he cannot repay the debt; he looked into his own mind and found no way. Hearing this and seeing Rama's face, Hanuman is thrilled and falls at his feet, overcome with love, and cries out for protection. Tulsidas places this here to show what service looks like to the one served: Rama measures the deed as a debt, and Hanuman takes it as a reason to bow, not to boast.

A child brings home a hard-won prize and the father, instead of praising, says he has nothing big enough to give back. The child does not hold out a hand for payment. He runs into the father's arms. Rama's admitted debt is the father's words; Hanuman's fall at his feet is the child's run.
