Whatever you do, whatever you eat, whatever you pour into the sacred fire, whatever you give away, and whatever austerities you practise, Arjun, son of Kunti, do it all as an offering to me.
Krishna runs through a list: doing, eating, offering in the fire, giving, and austerity. It starts with the plainest act, a meal, and moves up to the most formal. The word yat, whatever, repeats five times, so nothing is left out. Tapas, here translated as austerity, comes from a root for heat: effort that costs something. Arpana means a placing before, a handing over. So the instruction is to take each of these acts and place it before Krishna. Nothing new is added to the list. The same eating, giving and effort continue, but they are directed to him. Krishna says this because the surrounding verses have shown that he accepts even a leaf or a drop of water given with devotion. If so, the size of an act does not matter, and no part of life lies outside the reach of worship. The problem it answers is the split between sacred hours and ordinary hours. It asks Arjuna to bring his whole day into one direction, battle included. The commentators read the offering differently. Shankara takes it as making every act, ritual or worldly, an act for Ishvara, which loosens the hold of its result. Ramanuja takes it as the whole of life becoming loving service to the Lord. Madhva takes it as acting in the knowledge that God alone is supreme, so that the act becomes his worship.
At a post office the parcels on the counter differ: one holds socks, one books, one sweets. Each carries the same address on its label. The contents stay as they are, and only the destination is written in. The verse treats each act of a day as a parcel, and Krishna as the one address on all of them.
1. Choose one meal today and, before the first bite, pause for ten seconds and silently say that this food and the eating of it are given to Krishna. 2. Pick one small chore you usually rush, such as washing cups or answering a message. Do it slowly, with the same silent dedication. 3. In the evening, spend a minute noticing which of today's acts felt different when you did them this way, and which you forgot.
A mother is packing lunch boxes at six in the morning, half awake, already counting what is still undone before the school bus. The food is just a task between her and the rest of the day. The verse would change that moment in small steps. She names, silently, to whom the lunch is being given. She slows her hands for the length of one roll being folded. She lets the next task wait until this one is finished. Ordinary experience confirms that attention follows purpose: work done for a reason beyond itself is easier to stay with than work done only to get it over. The verse is about direction, not about outcome. Krishna's teaching here does not promise that the morning will be calmer, that the child will eat the lunch, or that her tiredness will lift. It does not replace sleep, help at home, or a doctor if the exhaustion is more than a bad week. It offers one thing: the same hands, doing the same work, turned toward a different address.
