Thus you will be freed from the bonds of action, from its good and bad fruits. With your mind steadied in the yoga of renunciation and fixed on me, you will be liberated and come to me.

Three terms carry it. Karma is action. Bandhana is a binding, a rope. Phala is fruit, the result. Krishna tells Arjuna that action ties a person not because it is done but because of the hope and dread riding on its results, the good ones as much as the bad. Sannyasa here is not leaving home or work. It is giving up the selfish claim on outcomes. Yoga is the steady joining of the mind to Krishna. Krishna says that a mind joined to him in this way is loosed from both kinds of fruit, and nothing here asks Arjuna to stop acting. His reason is that a person who works for a reward stays tied to the world's answer, and that answer is never in his hand. Work handed over leaves no rope to hold him. The last clause says where this ends: freed, he reaches Krishna. Liberation is an arrival, not an empty state. Arjuna is asked to keep acting, release the result, and keep his mind on Krishna. Shankara reads the renunciation as giving up the sense of being the doer, with release coming through knowledge. Ramanuja reads it as work joined with devotion, ending in reaching Krishna himself. Madhva stresses that the arrival comes by Krishna's grace, and that Krishna remains distinct from the soul.

A kite flier holds the string while the kite climbs. If he grips it hard and fears every dip, the wind drags his arm and tires him. If he lets the string run through loose fingers, the kite flies and his hand stays free. The string is the work, the wind is the result, and the open hand is the renouncing.

1. Pick one task today that matters to you, such as a message, a meal, or a piece of work. 2. Before you begin, say quietly: this is done, and the result is not mine to hold. 3. Do it with full attention, and when you finish, stop for one breath before checking how it was received. 4. Notice whether your shoulders and jaw are looser than usual while you wait for the answer.

A woman has cooked all morning for her husband's family. Now they sit at the table, and she watches the first spoon rise. Her stomach is tight and her ears are straining for praise or a frown. The verse would change that moment in steps. The cooking is already finished, so nothing more can be added to it. She can name what she gave: the hours, the care, the choice of dishes. She can then let the family's verdict belong to them. Her mind returns to Krishna, as the text asks, and not to the faces. Praise then arrives as a pleasant surprise, and silence or criticism does not knock her over. Ordinary experience agrees that a body braced for a verdict stays tense long after the verdict comes. The verse does not promise that the food will be liked, that a sharp remark will not sting, or that old strain in the household will vanish. What it holds out is that her worth and her peace do not hang on the plates.
