The verse and its meaning · Bhagavad Gita · Chapter 9 · Offered With Love
Impartial, Yet Intimate
Bhagavad Gita 9.29
Meaning · English
I am equally disposed to all living beings; none is hateful to me, none is dear. But those who worship me with loving devotion live in me, and I am also in them.
Three words carry it. Sama means level, even, the same toward everyone. Dveshya is the person one dislikes and pushes away; priya is the person held dear. Bhakti comes from a root meaning to share in, to take part, so it is love that joins in, not admiration from a distance. Krishna tells Arjuna that toward every living being he is level. No creature is his enemy and none is his favourite. Then comes the turn: those who worship him with bhakti are in him, and he is in them. The reason sits in the verses just before. Krishna has said that work offered to him frees a person, and a listener might conclude that God is choosy and hands out favours to the right people. Krishna answers that the difference lies in the meeting, not in his regard. Nearness is mutual and exists where someone turns toward him. All he asks of the listener is that turning, from whatever place they stand. Shankara compares the equality to fire, which warms those who come close and does not choose among those far off. Ramanuja reads the closeness as real tenderness, the Lord so bound to his devotees that he cannot be apart from them. Madhva stresses that what each receives follows that person's own devotion and nature, not whim.
A sun-warmed street where every house gets the same morning light. One family opens its shutters and the room fills with brightness; the house next door keeps them closed and stays dim. The light favoured neither. The open shutters are the devotion, and the lit room is the closeness Krishna describes.
1. Tonight, think of one person you find hard to like. Before you next see them, say silently, "same breath as mine," once. 2. Today, when you serve food or hand something out, give the same care to the person you know least. 3. Pick five minutes at a fixed time, sit quietly, and turn toward God in whatever form you hold, speaking in your own words as you would to a friend. 4. Afterwards, notice whether anything felt closer, and whether it came from the turning.
A grandmother is serving dinner. Her grandson, still angry about something said earlier, refuses to come to the table. Her first pull is to scold him, or to cool toward him the way people do with someone who has hurt their pride. Krishna's teaching changes the moment in steps. She sees that her love for him has not shifted, so there is nothing to punish. She keeps his plate warm and leaves his chair where it was. She calls him once, gently, without making his coming a test. When he walks in, closeness returns, and it came from his turning, not from her moving. Ordinary experience confirms that a welcome which stays open is easier to return to than one that has to be earned. The limit is plain: the teaching does not promise that he will come tonight, that the quarrel will dissolve, or that her hurt will vanish. It also does not replace a conversation, or help from a counsellor where a family is badly strained. It describes how Krishna holds all beings, even and open, and where nearness begins.
