Turning Toward the Good

Bhagavad Gita 9.30

Meaning · English

Even if the vilest sinner worships me with exclusive devotion, that person is certainly to be considered righteous, for they have properly resolved.

Three words carry it. Su-duracharah joins su, very, with duracara, bad conduct: a person whose behaviour is thoroughly bad. Ananya-bhak describes someone given to no other: devotion with nothing set beside it. Vyavasita is resolve, a settled decision of the mind. Krishna tells Arjuna that even a person of the worst conduct, if he worships Krishna with undivided devotion, is to be counted as righteous. The reason sits in the last clause: that person has resolved rightly. Krishna judges by the direction a person has now taken, not by the record behind him. The problem it answers is a quiet one, the belief that a bad past shuts the door, so that a stained person may as well not try. It asks the listener to see others by their turning, and to see themselves the same way. Shankara reads it as saying such a person is to be regarded as good because his resolve is right. Ramanuja stresses that the devotion must be exclusive, with no other refuge sought. Madhva ties the resolve to knowing Krishna as supreme.

A traveller comes in from a muddy road at night and turns his face toward one lit window. His boots are still caked, but his steps now all point one way. The mud is the past conduct; the direction of his steps is the resolve Krishna goes by.

1. Tonight, before sleep, think of one person you have written off because of something they did. Spend two minutes asking which way they are facing now. 2. Think of one thing in your own past that you still hold against yourself. Say aloud, once, what you intend from here. 3. Choose one small act that points the same way, such as an apology, a call, or ten quiet minutes of prayer, and do it before the week ends. 4. Notice whether your judgment of the person, or of yourself, softens even slightly.

A man stands at a bus stop the morning after leaving prison. He is sure every glance at him reads his record. In his pocket is an address for a job interview. Krishna's words to Arjuna would change that moment in steps. First, the record stops being the only fact about him; there is also the decision he made when he took the bus toward the interview. Second, the decision is counted as real, not as a pose. Third, he can ask only what the next right act is, and do it: arrive on time, answer plainly, stay for the shift. Ordinary experience agrees on one point: people who are never allowed to be more than their worst act rarely find the strength to become more. The verse does not promise that employers will forgive, that the harm done will be undone, or that the shame will lift by evening. It does not replace repair, accountability or the help of others. It says only that the turning matters now, and Krishna takes it seriously.
