A Promise of Lasting Peace

Bhagavad Gita 9.31

Meaning · English

Quickly he becomes a soul of virtue and reaches lasting peace. Declare it, son of Kunti: my devotee never perishes.

Three words carry the verse. Dharma-atma means a person whose very self is made of dharma, someone righteous in nature and not only in behaviour. Shanti is peace, and Krishna says it is lasting, not the brief calm after a problem is solved. Bhakta, the devotee, is one who shares in, and gives himself to, what he loves. Krishna tells Arjuna that this person becomes virtuous quickly, comes to rest in peace, and is never lost. The reason sits just before it. Krishna has said that even a person of bad conduct, if he turns to him with undivided devotion, is to be counted as righteous, because his resolve is now set right. This verse follows the turn to its result: the new direction reshapes the person, and soon. Then Krishna asks Arjuna to declare it aloud, so the promise is stated openly by the man who is about to go into battle afraid. What it asks of the listener is to treat a sincere turning as the real beginning, and not to count the past as the final verdict. Commentators read the weight differently. Shankara takes the change as the settling of the mind in the Lord. Ramanuja stresses that devotion itself, received by grace, is what purifies. Madhva stresses that the promise holds because of the Lord's supremacy over the devotee's fate.

A man walks into a room that has been shut and dark for years. He strikes one match. He does not have to clear away the years of darkness first, because the room is lit the moment the flame is there. A turned heart works like that flame, and the past is the dark.

1. Tonight, sit for two minutes and name one thing from this week you did badly. Say it plainly, once, without defending it. 2. Turn your attention for one minute toward whatever you hold most sacred, and say in your own words that you are turning back. 3. Notice whether you feel shame or steadiness afterward. 4. Tomorrow morning, do one small right act that fits the turn, such as returning a call you avoided.

A man who has been sober for three years stands in a car park at midnight after a wedding. He has had two drinks, and a bottle is on the back seat. One voice in him says he has ruined everything, so he may as well finish it. Krishna's promise answers that voice. A person who turns to him is not lost, and the turning counts at once, with no waiting period. So the man does not need to prove anything first. He puts the bottle in a bin, phones a friend who will answer, and drives home. The next morning he starts again from where he stands. Ordinary experience bears out one point: shame drives people to hide and repeat, while a way back that stays open makes returning easier. The limit is plain. The verse does not remove craving or make the next night easy. It is not a substitute for a doctor or a treatment programme where one is needed. It says only that the turn is real and that the devotee is not abandoned.
