Refuge Open to All
Bhagavad Gita 9.32
Meaning · English
Those who take refuge in me, Arjun, son of Pritha, even those of low birth, women, mercantile people and manual workers, even they reach the supreme destination.
Three words carry the teaching. Vyapashraya is taking refuge: leaning your whole weight on something, the way you lean on a wall that will hold. Papa-yoni means born in a low or sinful womb, the old way of naming those society ranked at the bottom. Gati is a going, a destination, and the word here is the supreme one. Krishna tells Arjuna that those whom his world counted as lower, women, merchants, manual workers, and anyone of low birth, arrive at that destination as surely as anyone, if they take refuge in him. The reason sits in the word hi, certainly: the arrival depends on the refuge, and nothing else is asked. Birth, sex and occupation are not the door. Shankara reads the list as people shut out from Vedic study who still reach the highest. Ramanuja takes it to mean that no birth or class bars a person who surrenders to the Lord. Madhva adds that the refuge goes with knowing the Lord as supreme, and that he gives the goal by his grace. The verse asks the listener to drop the idea that some people are too far away to be included, starting with themselves.
A village well with a rope and a bucket stands in the square. Nobody checks who lowers the bucket; whoever does gets water. The well is the one Krishna offers, the rope is the act of taking refuge, and the water is the supreme destination, which waits for anyone who reaches down.
1. Tonight, for five minutes, sit quietly and name one reason you think you are not fit to be close to God: your past, your job, your lack of learning. 2. Say it plainly in your mind, then say, "I take refuge as I am." Stay with that sentence for a minute and notice what in you resists it. 3. Tomorrow, when you meet someone you have quietly ranked below you, hold the thought that the same door is open to them.
A cleaner finishes a night shift at a hospital and slips into the back row of a prayer gathering at dawn. She has never read a scripture and wonders whether her kind of life counts here. Krishna's words answer her directly. She is not asked for learning, rank or a clean record. Only the leaning of the heart is asked, and she can do that in her work clothes, in the last row, today. That removes the first obstacle, the belief that she must become someone else before she is allowed to begin. Ordinary experience bears out part of this: people who feel shut out of a place often stay away even when no one stops them. The verse does not promise that a hall will welcome her kindly, that others will drop their prejudice, or that her tiredness and money worries will lift. It speaks of where she is held, not how she is treated.
