Wealth, Fire and Mountain
Bhagavad Gita 10.23
Meaning · English
Among the Rudras I am Lord Shiv. Among the yakshas and demons I am the god of wealth, treasurer of the celestial gods. Among the Vasus I am Agni, fire. Among mountains I am Meru.
Krishna keeps naming groups and picking out the one who stands first in each. Rudras are a company of fierce divine beings, and he is Shankara, another name for Shiv. Yakshas and rakshasas are semi-divine and demonic beings, and among them he is Kubera, who guards the treasure of the gods. Vasus are a company of elemental gods, and among them he is Agni, fire, which carries offerings and gives warmth. Among mountains he is Meru, the great mountain at the centre of the old world map. The word to hold is vibhuti, a splendour or outflowing of power. Krishna is not saying fire is only fire or that wealth is all he is. He is saying that where greatness shows itself, it is his. He gives the list because Arjuna asked for it, so that Arjuna could recognise him in the world and not only in the chariot beside him. Shankara reads such lists as pointing to the one Self behind every excellence. Ramanuja reads them as the Lord dwelling within all things and ruling them from inside. Madhva stresses that the Lord is present in each yet remains distinct from it. All three agree that the chief in each class points beyond itself.
Picture a village lit by one lamp on a high shelf. People praise the lamp, yet it only gives what the oil gives it. The great things Krishna lists are like that lamp: each is bright, and each points back to what feeds it.
1. Once today, choose one ordinary thing that is first of its kind near you: the stove flame, the tallest tree on your street, or the coin in your pocket. 2. Look at it for one full minute without a task. 3. Ask yourself what gives it this power, and let the answer stay open. 4. At night, say in a single sentence what you noticed.
A woman lights the gas stove at five in the morning, before the children wake and before a long day of work. She is tired and her list is already running. Krishna tells Arjuna that among the Vasus he is fire. If she takes that as his teaching, the small blue flame stops being a mere chore. She watches it for a few breaths, feels the warmth reach her hands, and treats the start of the day as a place to pause. Then she goes on with the tea and the list, a little less hurried. Ordinary experience confirms that fixing attention on one steady, simple thing can slow the breath. The limit is plain: the verse does not shorten her day, lighten her work or ease her worry. It gives her one thing to turn toward while she carries them.
