Finding Krishna Among the Best

Bhagavad Gita 10.24

Meaning · English

Among priests, Arjun, son of Pritha, know me as Brihaspati, the chief. Among warrior chiefs I am Kartikeya. Among reservoirs of water I am the ocean.

Three small words carry the verse. Purodhas means priests, from a root sense of 'those placed in front', the ones who stand before others and lead their worship. Mukhya means chief, from mukha, the face or mouth, the part that comes first. Viddhi means 'know', a command to recognise, not merely to hear. Krishna tells Arjuna to recognise him as Brihaspati among priests, as Kartikeya among warrior chiefs, and as the ocean among all bodies of water. In each group he points to the one that stands highest: the foremost priest, the foremost commander, the largest water of all. The reason is the one he gives throughout this chapter: the Absolute is hard to hold in the mind, so he offers places to look. Arjun is about to fight, so a commander is named next to a priest and a sea. The ocean is the limit of what a reservoir can be, and every river ends there. Krishna asks Arjun to see his presence in whatever is greatest in its kind. Shankara reads these as glimpses of the one Lord shining most clearly in each class. Ramanuja reads them as the glory of a Lord who is the inner self of all things. Madhva stresses that the Lord stays distinct from, and above, each of these.

A map of a big city has a few bright landmarks: the tallest tower, the central station, the main square. You do not mistake them for the whole city, but they let a stranger find his bearings. The best priest, the best commander and the ocean work like that for Arjun, fixed points that orient him toward Krishna.

1. Tonight, pick three things you know well: a kind of work, a game, a place. Name the best of each, such as the steadiest teacher you had, or the widest river you have seen. 2. Spend one minute on each, noticing what makes it stand first. Say quietly, 'This is a glimpse of Krishna.' 3. Tomorrow, when you meet someone excellent at their small work, a cook or a driver, pause for the same minute before moving on.

A young woman has just been made captain of her village cricket team, and the final is tomorrow. She is sitting on the boundary rope at dusk, certain that she is only the ordinary one who got picked. Krishna's words to Arjun run the other way. They ask Arjun to notice what stands first in each group and to take it as a sign of Krishna's presence. For her, that means looking at the best captain, coach or elder she has known, and asking what exactly made them stand in front: calm voice, fairness, being first to arrive. Then she holds those qualities as something to be recognised and respected, not envied. She walks into the morning with a clearer picture of what leading looks like and a reason to honour it. Ordinary experience confirms that a concrete example steadies us better than an abstract ideal. The verse does not promise she will win, nor that the nerves will vanish. It gives her a way of looking at excellence that makes her humbler and less afraid.
