Meaning · English
Among the great seers I am Bhrigu. Among utterances I am the single syllable Om. Among sacrifices I am the quiet repetition of God's names. Among things that do not move, I am the Himalayas.
Krishna gives four more examples of what is highest in its kind. The first is Bhrigu, who stands for the seers, the people who see further than others. The second is Om, a single syllable, set above every phrase and chant. The third is japa-yajna. Yajna means sacrifice, an offering made with care. Japa means repeating a name softly, over and over. So the offering here is no fire or grain, only attention given to God's name. The fourth is the Himalayas, the largest thing that stays where it is. Krishna's reason is the one running through this whole chapter: Arjuna needs places where the mind can find him, and each example is a place. A seer shows him in wisdom. Om shows him in sound. Japa shows him in the humblest act of devotion. The Himalayas show him in steadiness. The verse asks Arjuna to look at what is greatest in each field and see its source there. Shankara reads japa as the purest sacrifice because it harms no creature. Ramanuja reads each item as a glory of the Lord, who dwells within it as its inner self. Madhva reads them as signs of the Lord's power, with the Lord remaining distinct from and above them.
A temple bell is struck once. The note is short, but it hums in the air long after the hand has gone. A single syllable, or a name repeated softly, works like that: a small sound that fills a whole room and a whole day, and points back to the one who made it.
1. Choose one short word you hold dear, such as a name of God, or just 'peace'. 2. Today, during one routine task such as boiling the kettle or walking to the shop, repeat it quietly, in your mind or under your breath, for about two minutes. 3. When your attention drifts, bring it back to the word without scolding yourself. 4. Afterwards, notice whether your body feels any different: breath, shoulders, the pace of your thoughts.
A man sits in a hospital corridor at midnight while his wife is in surgery. His knee bounces. He checks his phone and puts it away, over and over. Nothing he does can help her now, and his mind runs through every bad outcome. Krishna's examples suggest another use of those hours. He could pick one short word and repeat it, slowly, in time with his breath. Ordinary experience bears out that a repeated, simple rhythm gives a racing mind one thing to hold, so the fear has less room. The word does not need to be understood to do this. The Himalayas, in the same verse, offer a second image: something that stays put while weather passes. He may find that he can sit through the night more steadily, with his hands quieter and his breathing slower. The text offers this as a way of keeping company with God in a hard hour. It does not promise that the surgery will go well, and it does not take away fear or grief. The surgeons and nurses are still the ones who help her.
