Bhagavad Gita 10.26

Meaning · English

Among all trees I am the banyan. Among the celestial sages I am Narad. Among the gandharvas I am Chitrarath. Among the perfected I am the sage Kapil.

Krishna keeps naming the finest example in each class, and here the classes are living things and holy beings. Three words carry it. Vriksha is a tree, and the ashvattha named here is the sacred banyan, the one the text singles out among all trees. Deva-rishi means a sage among the devas, the celestial ones, and Narad is that sage. Siddha means one who is perfected, someone who has reached what others are still working toward. Kapil is the muni, the silent thinker, placed at the head of the siddhas. The plain sense: the banyan stands first among trees, Narad among heavenly sages, Chitrarath among the gandharvas, who are the celestial musicians, and Kapil among the perfected. Krishna tells Arjuna that where something stands at the summit of its kind, he is present there. The reason is Arjuna's earlier request for a way to think of God everywhere, since he cannot hold the whole at once. The verse asks Arjuna to look for the highest of each kind and see God's glory there. Shankara reads these as places where the Lord's power shows most clearly, not as separate gods. Ramanuja reads them as forms whose self is the Lord. Madhva stresses that God remains distinct from and above each one.

A great banyan at the edge of a village shades the bus stop, the tea stall and the old men playing cards. People who never think about the tree still gather under it. It maps to the verse: the finest thing in each kind gathers the rest around it, and Krishna asks Arjuna to see the source in that gathering place.

1. Today, pick one kind of thing you deal with: trees on your street, singers you hear, teachers you have known. 2. Ask which one stands first of its kind for you, and why. 3. Spend two minutes looking at or recalling that one, noticing what makes it stand out. 4. Before sleep, say in one sentence what that quality was.

A grandmother sits on a bench at a railway station at dusk, waiting for a delayed train. Behind her a huge old banyan fills the sky with crows settling for the night. She has nothing to do and has been counting her worries. Then she looks up at the tree and thinks of the singer whose voice her late husband loved, and the teacher who first taught her to read. What the verse does here is turn her attention, step by step. She picks one thing, the tree. She asks what makes it the best of its kind. She lets that answer lead her to other things of that kind she has known. For a few minutes her mind rests on what is large and good instead of what is lacking. Ordinary experience agrees that where attention rests shapes the mood of a waiting hour. The limit is plain: this does not shorten the delay, ease her fear about the journey, or take away her grief for her husband.
